Meet the EcoEnglish team:
Allegra Troiano has extensive experience training English teachers. In Colombia as both a Fellow and a Specialist with the State Department, she trained BNC and public-school English teachers on strategies for teaching English with limited resources and trained National University and SENA faculty on communicative skills in the sciences. In addition, she trained Peace Corps Volunteers on TEFL strategies in 9 countries throughout the Inter-America/Pacific region. While taking the 2022 English Language Specialist Master Class in ESP for Climate Change and Sustainability, led by Susan Huss-Lederman, she came up with the idea of building a website based on the UN’s SDGs so that English teachers around the world could access Climate Sustainability materials and resources. She then pitched the idea to Ms. Huss-Lederman, who quickly joined her efforts in developing the website.
Susan Huss-Lederman has served as an English Language Specialist, implementing teacher education workshops in EcoEnglish (also known as Eco-PBL, or project-based learning for sustainability to address climate change) with English teachers at binational centers and public schools in the countries served by RELO Andes (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay), as well as a sustained, wrap-around professional development program in Galápagos, Ecuador funded by the US Embassy in Quito. She offered the 2022 Specialist Master Class in ESP for Climate Change and Sustainability for English Language Programs of the US Department of State.
Since spring of 2023, Ms. Troiano and Ms. Huss-Lederman have collaborated on building and developing this website, a free online bank of materials and resources for global educators who want to implement English education for climate sustainability into their teaching practices. Both Ms. Troiano and Ms. Huss-Lederman are motivated to work with teachers and youth on addressing climate change through educationally focused community projects designed to change behavior toward climate sustainability.
Wendy Coulson served as a Fellow in Colombia and as a Specialist in Jordan, Tunisia (Libya) and Mexico. She first connected with Ms. Huss-Lederman after taking her 2022 Master Class in ESP for Climate Change and Sustainability. So interested in Eco-PBL, she trained teachers in Mexico on Eco-PBL for Tourism Educators and then contributed to the development of this website. Passionate about spreading the word about climate sustainability, Ms. Coulson continues to play an advisory role in the development of the website. She has a certificate in Education for Sustainable Development from the Earth Charter Institute and is working toward a certificate in ESD, Global Citizenship and Transformative Learning offered by the Earth Charter Institute in conjunction with the UNESCO Chair for International Education for Development at George Washington University.
Jon Brian Siker is a former ESL teacher turned software engineer who splits his time between the USA and Colombia. He believes access to communication and information is vital in today's global world and that it is equally important to work across cultures in order to bridge the gaps within both. He has been delighted to contribute his knowledge and skills to the project.
Please contact Ms. Troiano and Ms. Huss-Lederman with comments, questions about the site, or suggestions for improvement. Feel free to share this website with anyone who might be interested in climate sustainability. They would love to get your feedback on the site and can be contacted at EcoEnglishWorld@gmail.com
